Opening Keynote - Develop an Unstoppable Mindset: Success Strategies for Safety Teams & Supervisors
With the alarming predominance of workplace accidents caused by human error, the importance of engaging teams and individuals with safety procedures in a way that is meaningful to them and can promote significant change is crucial. Most human factors involved in accidents occur in the arena of memory, awareness and attention, judgment and reasoning, and attitude and risk perception. Scott details his unforgettable, life-changing story of turning a paralyzing setback into a powerful comeback that inspires teams to develop a true safety MINDSET. Scott details how easy it is to become desensitized to common safety routines, and how 'just this once' can tragically impact the rest of their lives.

Opportunities and limitations of virtual reality in behavorial interventions and manipulations for occupational safety training
Advances in VR technologies have led to the creation of an effective and interactive education and training environment for hands-on experience. Specifically, VR offers several specific advantages in occupational safety training, including precise control and presentation of complex stimuli, safe learning environments, and personalized interventions. Because of these advantages, VR technologies have been adopted extensively for safety training. Previous studies in safety have incorporated VR to enhance workers’ safety knowledge and safety skills. However, the use of VR as a behavioral intervention tool has not been fully explored, and many questions remain regarding how workers' unsafe behavior can be measured in VR environments, and how workers’ unsafe behaviors to workplace hazards can be curbed using VR-based behavioral interventions. To understand these issues, this session aims to discuss how VR can be beneficial in providing effective behavioral interventions and manipulations. By attending this session, the audience is expected to have a better understanding of the current opportunities and limitations of VR in behavioral interventions and manipulations for occupational training and education.

Safety’s Flux Capacitor: Shaping the future of your organization
Companies often attempt to address individual issues through organizational systems improvements. The hierarchy of controls and safety management systems have specific functions, but typically don’t address individual safety concerns. The solution is understanding how human factors impact an organization. This session demonstrates how the interactions of a human factors framework model can be used for a holistic approach to safety. We identify common challenges associated with human factors, specifically from both individuals and organizations, and discuss the impact of human factors on overall outcome reliability in the areas of safety, performance, employee engagement, and culture.

Safety Management Systems are for small companies too!
This presentation shows how to integrate a Safety Management System (SMS) into the operations of a small to medium-sized company. We present a brief description on individual components of a traditional safety program. We expand significantly on how an SMS includes the individual components of a safety program and how the SMS is integrated into day-to-day operations and decision-making processes. The SMS shows how efforts to provide a safe workplace are integrated into day-to-day operations and the overall business planning and goal setting. The SMS is an effective way to get “safety into the board room” to talk with and work side by side with operations. We use the components and information within ANSI/ASSP Z10.0-2019: Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems and makes general references to the ISO 45001 standard.

Building a positive culture around injuries and absences
This workshop aims to increase awareness of communication methods and emphasize positive communication techniques to build a positive culture for post-injury communication. Claims often get "off track" because workers feel angry or slighted rather than because they were injured. We discuss communicating in person and in writing to maintain a positive relationship with injured workers. These techniques also apply to non-industrial disability, ADA issues, and FMLA leaves. Communication and positive culture begin long before an injury occurs. Together we examine the employers’ approach to create and maintain the best culture possible.

NFPA 70B – from recommended practice to standard
NFPA 70B – Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance is a recommended practice, meaning it contains provisions that are advised, but not required. A recommended practice is similar in structure to a code or standard but contains non-mandatory language using the word “should” to indicate recommendations in the body of the text. With the 2023 Edition, NFPA 70B will become a standard that authorities having jurisdiction can mandate and enforce. This session discusses the major changes, how NFPA 70B integrates with other standards such as NFPA 70E, and what this means for your facilities.

From risk to resilience... building an active shooter plan
We face many security and safety risks. Organizations need to work proactively to identify these risks. But what do you do once the risks are identified? This presentation educates participants on identifying risks and building resilient security and safety plans. We use the risk scenario of an active shooter incident to demonstrate how to build a comprehensive security plan that provides resilience for their organization.

Improving your safety culture: It’s not as tough as you think!
Improving your safety culture is not as tough as you think – especially if you know what to do! Employers want their employees to be safe. They are OSHA compliant and have dedicated significant resources to employee safety but results still fall short. This workshop covers several key components necessary for positive culture change. We also identify the most common mistakes companies make resulting in shortfalls, lackluster results, and the same old “flavor of the day” mentality from their employees. Attendees walk away with fresh ideas, new approaches, and real-world solutions to improve their safety culture and implement them immediately.

Believe in safety
Believe in safety is a story that takes you on an incredible journey. This story begins with "the day" an ARC flash nearly took Brandon's life. One of the most valued aspects of Brandon’s story is the full disclosure of his pre-accident mindset. He discusses the realities of safety culture on the job and how this led him to that fateful day. He vividly describes how this accident changed not only his life, but the lives of those that love him. Come and experience this message and leave with a renewed energy and focus on safety. Brandon’s story will captivate you! You will see tears, laughter, and a new motivation to make a change. Realize this could happen to you if you don’t take safety seriously.

Bridging generational gaps
Generational conflict in the workplace is a tale as old as time. The rapid technology changes during the COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated the issue. Currently, there are five generations in the workplace, with four generations dominant. Baby boomers continued to retire during “The Great Resignation” and millennials are slated to account for 75% of the global workforce by 2025. With Gen Z (the largest generation) also making their entrance into the workforce, it’s time to put the work in to make the transition as smooth as possible to produce sustainable safety results that transcend generational gaps and barriers.

Walking & working surfaces: Risk mitigation with EASE
Slips, trips, and falls (STF) are a leading cause of severe work-related injuries and fatalities. The causes of STF events on walking and working surfaces are often obvious after the fact, but frequently overlooked prior to a loss. The EASE review walks the user through an evaluation of the Environment (physical factors), Actions (behavioral factors), Safety measures (control options), and Evaluation strategies (effectiveness and sustainability). Applying the EASE concepts from this presentation offers a way to effectively identify and mitigate STF risk factors beforehand and can prevent needless pain and loss.

Improving safety around PIVs
Powered Industrial Vehicles (PIVs) can cause serious accidents with pedestrian workers. There are multiple products built around different technologies that provide situational awareness to both PIV operators and pedestrian workers. We will review the different technologies and their strengths and weaknesses. We will also review the type of data that can be collected from these different technologies to help users make good decisions. We will review the benefits users get from applying these technologies. Some benefits include, identifying workers who could benefit from additional training, identifying areas within a facility that create high risk of accident, and changing worker behavior by providing real time risk information.

Positive psychology: The science of being happy
Employees are becoming more prone to experiencing symptoms related to disengagement, fatigue, burnout, and an overall mental distress. This takes the focus from safety and deadlines and places it on merely surviving the day. A leader experiencing burnout may also find workplace negative attitudes in his or her daily life. Joy in the simple things is no longer experienced. Headaches, muscle tension, or sleep disturbances that might have occurred occasionally in a person's life become a chronic occurrence for someone experiencing burnout (Maslach & Leiter, 2008). These negative experiences can be prevented with proper education and self-care. This presentation focuses on positive psychology and harnessing the power of shifting one’s perspective to maximize the potential for happiness in many of our everyday behaviors. We also define happiness, positivity, and provide actionable tips in achieving comprehensive care for ourselves and others.

Just because you are compliant does not mean you are safe
Updated OSHA regulations and an ongoing increase in OSHA citations have created a renewed focus on fall protection, and many organizations are recognizing a need to re-evaluate their fall protection programs. While achieving compliance is critical to address the legal requirements, OSHA regulations are not specific or robust enough to truly address all the risks. This session gives you the information you need to ensure your organization is not only compliant, but also effectively addresses risk to keep your workers safe. For example, even if you're technically using the correct fall protection solution outlined in the OSHA regulations to address a fall hazard, there are a number of additional factors that must be addressed to truly protect workers using a fall protection system. Have you evaluated fall clearances and created a rescue procedure? Do your employees know how to use the equipment and follow the correct procedures? Just handing an employee a piece of equipment is not enough. This session covers the most misunderstood requirements from OSHA fall protection regulations and provides tips for addressing these items, as well as additional best practices that should be implemented to reduce fall risk. Key topics include roof fall protection, anchorages, ladder climbing systems, leading edge equipment and training.

Stress and healing the human brain
How can you heal the human brain and improve mental health conditions? In 2008, Scott was diagnosed with PTSD. His son was born with Asperger’s Autism. Traditional psychiatric care was unhelpful, even though they sought the best care the medical profession could offer. In 2008, they went to the Amen Clinic to undergo nuclear SPECT brains scans. In August 2020, they had follow-up scans which showed between 75% to 85% improvement. In fact, Scott’s follow up scans showed that his OCD was gone. In this session, you will learn how to care for your brain! Scott will show authenticated photographic evidence of how his brain has improved. How does the human brain rewire itself and how can you make it happen? What is “BDNF” and how does it aid growth of new neurons? Based on Scott’s newest book, “Healing The Human Brain”, he will show you how you can regain your life and your organization by building a better brain. Scott will not only outline these processes for you in his own unique, practical, and entertaining style, but he will show you how to use this information now!

Leading with movement screens to promote total musculoskeletal health
Traditional approaches to workplace wellness have logistic challenges and may result in a negative return on investment. Biometrics are often not collected for musculoskeletal disorders that account for most work-related injuries and lost-time costs. Hear an occupational health expert and leader describe a novel approach to workplace wellness that leads with movement screening and fitness coaching of workers to promote suitable physical activity, alleviate musculoskeletal symptoms, and manage obesity.

Transitional work programs-"We’ve Got you Covered"
This session provides employers an overview of the Transitional Work Grant Program, a program in which BWC covers 100% of the costs associated with the development of a customized return to work plan. The program prepares employers to manage their employee's injuries and offer productive work before they are fully fit for duty. In return, employers may see substantial returns on their investment and reduction in their premium. The Transitional Bonus Program encourages employers to use their transitional work plan. Participating employers can receive a premium rebate based on the number of injured employees returned to work through use of their transitional work plan.

This panel discussion focuses on claims and injury management within the first 30 days of the injury date. BWC and MCO staff discuss the roles of BWC, MCOs, and health care providers in the claims/injury management process. A good understanding of what should happen after a claim occurs sets the stage for a successful resolution. Relevant Ohio statutes, rules, policies, and forms (i.e., MEDCO-14, and C-9 treatment requests) are covered. We provide takeaway materials to help you implement the tactics presented.

Substance Use Recovery and Workplace Safety (SURWSP) Program
Has your business considered having a substance use program to protect your employees but found the costs prohibitive to your bottom line? BWC can offset some of the costs, like policy development and legal review, employee education and supervisor training, and even train-the-trainer classes! If your substance policy includes second chance language when an employee tests positive for the first time, you can request reimbursement for drug testing including pre-employment, post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow up testing. BWC's SURWSP will provide reimbursement for costs associated with keeping your company's substance use policy current, even if you do not participate in BWC's Drug Free Safety Program. Employees are automatically eligible to participate in BWC's Better You, Better Ohio!® program. Come to this session to hear about these money saving programs!
