Advances in VR technologies have led to the creation of an effective and interactive education and training environment for hands-on experience. Specifically, VR offers several specific advantages in occupational safety training, including precise control and presentation of complex stimuli, safe learning environments, and personalized interventions. Because of these advantages, VR technologies have been adopted extensively for safety training. Previous studies in safety have incorporated VR to enhance workers’ safety knowledge and safety skills. However, the use of VR as a behavioral intervention tool has not been fully explored, and many questions remain regarding how workers' unsafe behavior can be measured in VR environments, and how workers’ unsafe behaviors to workplace hazards can be curbed using VR-based behavioral interventions. To understand these issues, this session aims to discuss how VR can be beneficial in providing effective behavioral interventions and manipulations. This presentation shows how to integrate a Safety Management System (SMS) into the operations of a small to medium-sized company. We present a brief description on individual components of a traditional safety program. The SMS shows how efforts to provide a safe workplace are integrated into day-to-day operations and the overall business planning and goal setting. The SMS is an effective way to get “safety into the board room” to talk with and work side by side with operations. Remodeling and demolition of existing facilities can be exciting for property owners but construction workers face many hazards. This session will identify key considerations for construction companies regarding locating and identifying utilities, structural considerations, hazardous materials/chemicals, and health hazards associated with demolition tasks during building renovation.

We also discuss different work zone setups for different worksite locations, temporary traffic control devices, and other work zone-related information for projects within the public right-of-way.

Glyphosate is one of the most popular broad-spectrum herbicides in the world, part of the formulation commonly known as Roundup. There is significant controversy between different agencies regarding carcinogenicity of glyphosate. The session attempts to summarize available toxicological information about glyphosate, involving participants in a discussion about the weight of evidence interpreted from scientific and regulatory points of view.

NFPA 70B – Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance is a recommended practice, meaning it contains provisions that are advised, but not required. A recommended practice is similar in structure to a code or standard but contains non-mandatory language using the word “should” to indicate recommendations in the body of the text. With the 2023 Edition, NFPA 70B will become a standard that authorities having jurisdiction can mandate and enforce. This session discusses the major changes, how NFPA 70B integrates with other standards such as NFPA 70E, and what this means for your facilities.

This workshop provides an overview of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Stormwater Permitting Program. Specifically, the Construction Site Stormwater, Industrial and Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permitting programs are discussed. Develop an understanding of what activities and facilities are subject to NPDES stormwater permitting, the basic requirements of such permits, and how to obtain a permit if required.

Learn what to expect during a federal SPCC inspection and the common issues seen in the field. The workshop also discusses materials available to assist the regulatory community in understanding the SPCC rule and addresses some frequently asked questions.

The new ANSI A92 standards for the Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP) access industry became effective in June 2020. With these standards came new requirements for supervisor training. Anyone who directly supervises MEWP operators is considered a supervisor. According to the new standards, supervisors must be trained in proper selection, potential hazards, and MEWP rules, standards, and regulations. This informative session will keep you up to date on these important changes.

Generational conflict in the workplace is a tale as old as time. The rapid technology changes during the COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated the issue. Currently, there are five generations in the workplace, with four generations dominant. Baby boomers continued to retire during “The Great Resignation” and millennials are slated to account for 75% of the global workforce by 2025. With Gen Z (the largest generation) also making their entrance into the workforce, it’s time to put the work in to make the transition as smooth as possible to produce sustainable safety results that transcend generational gaps and barriers.

Construction workers face an ever-changing variety of hazards every day. Workers’ exposures are complicated due to the variability and duration of common construction tasks. Tasks that can expose workers to inhalation hazards include welding, abrasive blasting, cutting brick and concrete, grinding masonry, and use of solvents and corrosives. This session discusses task-based assessments and work practice evaluations to determine employees’ airborne exposures to potentially toxic agents, physical, and ergonomic stressors.

Updated OSHA regulations and an ongoing increase in OSHA citations have created a renewed focus on fall protection, and many organizations are recognizing a need to re-evaluate their fall protection programs. While achieving compliance is critical to address the legal requirements, OSHA regulations are not specific or robust enough to truly address all the risks. This session gives you the information you need to ensure your organization is not only compliant, but also effectively addresses risk to keep your workers safe. For example, even if you're technically using the correct fall protection solution outlined in the OSHA regulations to address a fall hazard, there are a number of additional factors that must be addressed to truly protect workers using a fall protection system. Have you evaluated fall clearances and created a rescue procedure? Do your employees know how to use the equipment and follow the correct procedures? Just handing an employee a piece of equipment is not enough. This session covers the most misunderstood requirements from OSHA fall protection regulations and provides tips for addressing these items, as well as additional best practices that should be implemented to reduce fall risk. Industrial Hygiene is the science devoted to the recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards that may result in illness or injury. In addition, we’ll introduce methods of evaluation including the development of sampling strategies.
